We all have academic or professional experience in environmental science, policy or behavioural change and we have consultants in over 40 countries, who are co-ordinated by our teams in the US and Europe.

Peter Browning

CEO

BEC’s founding CEO is a recognized pioneer of environmental communications, responsible for some of the world’s most impactful strategic campaigns of the last 20 years. In the 2000s, he designed and co-ordinated the first European initiative on hydrogen in transport, then developed the first communications strategy for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In the 2010s, his campaigns increased funding for nature, reduced trade in ivory, and expanded deployment of solar energy, among many notable achievements.

He developed his skills in communications at CNC-Communications & Network Consulting (now part of Publicis), and then served as the first Communications Director of Sir Richard Branson’s B Team. A graduate in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford, he also worked for several years as a foreign correspondent in Paris.

Today Peter leads and manages BEC from Washington, DC. He is also a member of the Expert Advisory Group of the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity (VCMI) Initiative.

Tom Buchanan

Managing Director

Tom Buchanan is BEC’s Managing Director. Based in London, Tom has a decade of experience in public relations, working with clients from a variety of sectors in almost every continent, including companies such as Amazon, HSBC, ABB and Yoox Net-A-Porter, NGOs including The Nature Conservancy, various UN organisations, and a host of businesspeople, politicians and celebrities.

A media and strategy specialist, Tom also previously worked with Bell Pottinger and LVMH.

Julia Kaltenborn

Julia ran BEC’s original US office in New York City until 2021, when she moved back to her native Germany. Julia has worked for 15 years in communications and sustainability, starting at British American Tobacco (BAT). She then joined German consultancy Deekeling Arndt Advisors to lead on sustainability, before moving to Air Liquide in corporate communications.

Chris Campkin

Finance Director

Chris has over 25 years’ experience of commercial and financial management in creative communications businesses. Prior to joining BEC, he spent six years as Group CFO of international advertising agency Leagas Delaney. Chris received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences from University of Bath and is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants.

Moritz Rommerskirchen

Director, Germany

Moritz joined the BEC team in 2013 to run BEC’s EU offer from offices on the banks of the Rhine in Bonn. He comes from a publishing and economics background, and has built great expertise in science and data-based communications on the environment. Prior to BEC, he worked in communications at auto giant DaimlerChrysler in the US and Germany, and agency-side at CNC and Weber Shandwick in London.

Judit has 15 years of experience of corporate communications, branding and the environment at agencies she co-founded – Imaguine and sixtrain. She has developed communications campaigns for the UN scientific bodies on biodiversity and climate change, for corporations like Salesforce and T-Mobile US, and helped to build the Impossible Foods brand over four years through PR.

Mark has 25 years’ experience in communications on environmental issues. He started out at the European Environment Agency before moving to NYC where he became VP of CSR at Edelman. He then worked for 15 years leading communications in the NGO sector: at Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room, the Rocky Mountain Institute, and recently the Coalition for Rainforest Nations.

Callum Heckstall-Smith

Director

Callum specializes in global communications with over a decade of experience across the public, private, and third sectors. Prior to joining BEC, Callum managed EMEA and global accounts at agencies including Edelman and FleishmanHillard, and most recently, led strategic-communications for international climate change initiatives, including the COP26 Presidency-backed Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative. Callum received his Master of Public Administration, with a focus on climate change and development economics, from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Hannah Lassiter

Vice President of Communications

Hannah has experience helping clients in the U.S. Federal Government develop and manage communications campaigns and strategic media engagement plans around issues such as clean energy, energy security, project finance, environmental management, and preventive health care, among others. She started her career in communications at Edelman where she worked for nearly four years. Hannah received her Bachelor of Arts in Communication from California State University, Sacramento and her Master of Arts in Political Communication from American University.

Alexander Bryden

Alexander has over a decade of experience building and executing effective strategic communications campaigns on behalf of leading non-profits, foundations, and corporations taking on the most challenging issues of our time. Prior to BEC, Alexander worked at Porter Novelli and Fenton Communications as well as across numerous political and policy campaigns in New York and New Jersey. Alexander received his Master of Science in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from The New School and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Rutgers University.

Jessica Ware

Jess has over a decade of hands-on experience working in media and communications, initially as a journalist for British and German outlets and most recently at the centre of the UK Government in media roles focusing on climate and diplomacy. These include at the Cabinet Office as Head of News for COP26, at No10 Downing Street specialising in foreign and international development affairs in the press team, at the Ministry of Defence and at the Department for Education. She received her Master of Arts from City, University of London in newspaper journalism and her Bachelor of Arts in German and French from the University of Leeds.

Joe Lovstrom

Account Director

Joe has over seven years’ experience leading on digital strategy development and implementation in both the public and private sector. Prior to joining BEC, Joe was the senior digital strategist for COP26, where he oversaw the creation and activation of digital communications strategies ahead of the UN Climate change Conference and all preceding major climate events. Following this, Joe consulted on behalf of the UK Government Communications Service International, building capability in digital best practice and crisis communications. Joe started his career as a Digital Strategist for Publicis Media, where he led on their strategic media planning, buying and activating of digital campaigns for clients such as Heineken and IMAX.

Rachna Mehta

Rachna has experience helping clients in the public and private sector develop and manage advocacy campaigns and strategic communications plans around issues such as marine conservation, transportation decarbonization, air quality & health, carbon & resource management, among others. She started her career in the international development space, supporting USAID & USDA governance, food and health programs across Sub-Saharan Africa. Rachna received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Rochester, and her Master of Arts in International Affairs from American University.

Zoë has experience managing strategic communications campaigns across a wide range of environmental and development issues, ranging from WASH to carbon markets. Zoë started her career at Hanover Communications, where she helped run political and policy campaigns across a range of sustainability and clean energy issues. She also worked in Rwanda for the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID), and in renewable energy asset trading for Savills. She received her first class master’s degree in Politics from the University of Edinburgh, where she led FreshSight, the UK’s oldest and largest student-led strategy consulting firm for social sector clients.

Sayali has experience executing integrated communications campaigns across a wide range of energy and environmental issues. She started her career on Edelman’s Energy team, where she helped clients across the energy spectrum promote their brand and influence policy positions. From there, she served as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER), where she led an external communications team focused on elevating CESER’s mission to secure the U.S. power grid from all threats, particularly the climate crisis. Sayali received her Bachelor of Arts in International Development from King’s College London.

Karina Moxon

Account Manager

Karina has experience managing and executing strategic research and report-writing projects for organizations including UNDP, WRAP and IUCN, as well as executing global media campaigns for leading climate scientists, and on topics ranging from ecosystem restoration, climate tipping points, carbon markets to regenerative agriculture. Prior to this, she received her MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London, where she specialized in environmental science, policy, and natural resource management, and a BSc in Politics and History from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Karina also previously worked in digital communications for two years.

Caroline has a background in communications and public opinion research, shepartners closely with clients to navigate strategic communications and successful storytelling. Prior, she was a Senior Account Executive on Edelman’s D.C. Energy team and has extensive experience supporting multiple different offices within the U.S. Department of Energy. Carolineworked for GQR Research, a public opinion research firm, where she supported a wide range of international clients, NGOs, corporations, and progressivepolitical parties. She was also involved in a first-of-its-kind counter-disinfo effort with 300+ progressive orgs and the democratic party in the 2020 U.S. election

Jenny has experience working at an integrated marketing agency where she served as a Public Relations Account Executive for the past three years. Her expertise spans across strategic communications, content creation, and media relations. In her previous role, Jenny worked for a wide breadth of clientele including environmentally focused government accounts such as NOAA, NFWF, FEMA and the NFIP.Jenny received her MA in Strategic Communications from Georgetown University. Through her master’s program, she has partnered with the World Wildlife Fund, Nature Conservancy, and Conservation Nation on a variety of communications projects.

Megan has a diverse background in account and project management, content development, and media relations, with particular support to environmental issue advocacy campaigns and renewable energy projects. She started her career in communications with a globally operating non-profit, and from there transitioned into public relations, working for agencies of various focuses and sizes. Megan received her Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Davis & Elkins College and her Master of Research in Human Rights & International Politics from the University of Glasgow.

Paula has conducted research on the communications challenges surrounding the energy transition, including fossil fuel phase-out and wind energy acceptance. Paula received her Bachelor and Master of Arts in Geography from the University of Cambridge, and her Master of Science in Environmental Science from Wageningen University & Research.

Isobel has experience executing global media campaigns and strategic communications around environmental topics including supply chain sustainability, WASH, carbon markets and regenerative agriculture. Prior to this, Isobel received her first-class Bachelor of Art in Anthropology from the University of Bristol and her Master of Science in Anthropology, Environment and Development from UCL, where she specialized in sustainable resource use and community-led conservation.

Áine Curtin

Account Executive

Áine has supported on numerous media campaigns from plastic consumption to corporate green-hushing, she has also supported on digital strategy development most recently for IUCN, which included website design development and content creation. Prior to this Áine received her MSc in Public Policy and Management at King’s College where her research was centered on UK environmental policy, specifically focusing on single-use plastic policy. Áine also received her BA in Politics and International Relations from the University of Kent.

Hunter Smith

Account Executive

Hunter has assisted on accounts ranging from voluntary carbon market initiatives and standards to coalitions of climate scientists, to multilateral and intergovernmental organizations and agencies. She has experience with media monitoring and analysis on these accounts, as well as drafting technical reports on behalf of clients and coordinating media around key events in the climate action calendar. Hunter received a first class MA in Chinese Studies from the University of Edinburgh where she researched public perceptions of climate change in China and worked as a consultant for FreshSight – a student-led strategy consulting firm for social enterprises.
